Lindane

An organochlorine insecticide, the gamma isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane: its insecticidal activity was discovered in 1942 and it reached the market in 1949. Used in agriculture and against lice and scabies, in 2009 it was restricted by the Stockholm Convention to second-line pharmaceutical treatment only. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know? The compound was first synthesised by Michael Faraday in 1825; the name, instead, honours the Dutch chemist Teunis van der Linden, who isolated and described the gamma isomer in 1912.
