Lucanthone
A thioxanthenone invented in 1938 in Germany by Hans Mauss and colleagues and used against schistosomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms: it is a prodrug that the body turns into the active metabolite hycanthone, later replaced by drugs such as praziquantel. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know?Decades later it returned to the lab in a new role: it has been tested as an adjunct to radiotherapy, including for brain metastases, and is being studied against gliomas.
