Lysergide

A semi-synthetic compound derived from lysergic acid, of the ergot alkaloid family, first synthesised on 16 November 1938 in Basel, Switzerland, by chemist Albert Hofmann, as part of a systematic study of lysergic acid amides. This family brings together the active ingredient.

Did you know? With that synthesis Hofmann was looking for a respiratory and circulatory stimulant; the Swiss chemist, who also worked out the structure of the squill glycosides, lived to the age of 102.
