Malathion
An organophosphate insecticide that blocks the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in insects, first registered in the United States in 1956: it is used in agriculture, in mosquito and fruit fly control programmes and, at low concentrations, in lotions against head lice. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities and other impurities.
Did you know?Mammals and birds have more carboxylesterase than insects: they break malathion down before it can turn into malaoxon, its active form, which explains its low toxicity to them.
