Menthol
A monoterpene alcohol found in the oils of peppermint and corn mint (Mentha arvensis): by activating the TRPM8 cold receptors it gives the typical cooling sensation, and it is used in balms, throat remedies, toothpastes and mouthwashes. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It was first isolated in 1771 by the German Hieronymus David Gaubius, but the name 'menthol' only arrived in 1861, chosen by the chemist Alphonse Oppenheim.
