Meropenem
A broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic, patented in 1983 and approved in the United States in 1996: it is given intravenously for serious infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and abdominal infections. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?Carbapenems descend from thienamycin, produced by the bacterium Streptomyces cattleya; unlike imipenem, meropenem resists the kidney enzyme dehydropeptidase-I and does not need to be paired with cilastatin.
