Methadone

A synthetic opioid developed in Germany in 1937 by the chemists Bockmühl and Ehrhart; it is used for pain and in maintenance treatment of opioid dependence. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?It acts on the same receptors as morphine despite having a completely different chemical structure; its use as maintenance therapy was studied from 1964 at Rockefeller University in New York.
