Methaqualone

A sedative-hypnotic of the quinazolinone class that enhances the action of GABA at GABA-A receptors: in the 1960s and 1970s it was prescribed for insomnia and as a muscle relaxant, before leaving medical use in the 1980s. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know?It was synthesised in India in 1951 by Indra Kishore Kacker and Syed Husain Zaheer, who were looking for new antimalarials: its sedative properties were only discovered in 1955.
