Methazolamide

An inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, the enzyme that turns carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, structurally related to acetazolamide and the sulfonamides: it lowers the pressure inside the eye. It was approved in the US in 1959 for glaucoma. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?A 1950s medicine with a possible new role: in 2024 a study published in Nature Chemical Biology suggested it could counter the toxicity of the tau protein, which is involved in Alzheimer's disease.
