Methylthiouracil
An antithyroid medicine of the thioamide family, a close relative of propylthiouracil, introduced in the 1940s to treat hyperthyroidism: it reduces the formation of thyroid hormones in the gland. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know? Its synthesis, by condensing ethyl acetoacetate with thiourea, was already described in an 1886 paper: decades before its effect on the thyroid was put to use in the 1940s.
