Mupirocin

A topical antibiotic that blocks bacterial protein synthesis by acting on the enzyme isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase. Isolated in 1971, it has been used since the 1980s as an ointment for impetigo and to clear staphylococci from the nose. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know? Its chemical name, pseudomonic acid, recalls the bacterium that makes it, Pseudomonas fluorescens, which is largely resistant to its own antibiotic.
