Mycophenolate

An immunosuppressant that blocks the enzyme IMPDH, on which lymphocytes depend to multiply; as mycophenolate mofetil it has been approved since 1995 to prevent rejection in kidney transplants and, later, in heart and liver transplants too. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?Mycophenolic acid was discovered in 1893 by the Piedmontese scientist Bartolomeo Gosio in a mould from spoiled maize: it was the first antibiotic isolated in pure, crystalline form, then forgotten until 1912.
