Olaparib

The first inhibitor of PARP, an enzyme that helps cells repair DNA: approved in 2014 in Europe and the United States, it is used mainly in tumours with BRCA gene mutations, starting with ovarian cancer. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It exploits 'synthetic lethality': in 2005 two independent research groups found that cells lacking working BRCA die when PARP is also blocked, while healthy cells survive.
