Paromomycin
An aminoglycoside antibiotic discovered in the 1950s from a bacterium of the genus Streptomyces and in medical use since 1960; it is used against intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis and leishmaniasis and is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know?Taken by mouth it is barely absorbed and is excreted unchanged in the faeces: this is why it acts right in the gut, where amoebae and giardia live.
