Phenacetin

One of the first synthetic fever reducers and painkillers, on the market from 1887 and used for decades in many powders for pain and fever. It was withdrawn in Canada in 1973 and in the United States in 1983 because of its harmful effects on the kidneys. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know?In the liver it is converted mainly into paracetamol, the substance actually responsible for its effect: a molecule already known in the 19th century but long overlooked, which later took its place.
