Phloroglucinol
A simple phenol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) used as an antispasmodic for spasmodic pain of the stomach, gut, bile ducts and urinary tract; in nature it is also made by brown algae. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?Austrian chemist Heinrich Hlasiwetz obtained it in 1855 from phloretin and named it phloroglucin for its "extremely sweet" taste. With hydrochloric acid it stains the lignin in wood bright red.
