Prasugrel
An antiplatelet medicine of the thienopyridine family, developed in Japan, that irreversibly blocks the P2Y12 receptor on platelets. Approved in 2009, it is used with acetylsalicylic acid in acute coronary syndromes treated with angioplasty. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?On its own it is inactive: esterases in the gut and liver first turn it into a thiolactone, then liver CYP enzymes convert it into the active metabolite that binds to platelets.
