Progesterone

A steroid hormone produced mainly by the corpus luteum of the ovary and by the placenta: it prepares the uterus for embryo implantation and supports pregnancy. It is used in gynaecology and assisted reproduction. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?In the 1940s chemist Russell Marker made it from a Mexican wild yam (Dioscorea): from 10 tonnes of dried roots he obtained 3 kg of hormone, and within a few years its price fell from 80 to 2 dollars a gram.
