Propranolol
The first widely used beta blocker, developed in the 1960s by Scottish pharmacologist James Black (Nobel Prize, 1988): patented in 1962 and in use since 1964, it is used for high blood pressure, angina and arrhythmias. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?In 2008, in Bordeaux, it was found by chance to shrink infantile haemangiomas: a baby treated with propranolol for a heart problem saw the haemangioma rapidly regress.
