Protionamide
An antituberculosis drug of the thioamide family, a close relative of ethionamide (discovered in France in 1956 and studied by Noël Rist and colleagues): it is used against tuberculosis, including multidrug-resistant forms, and leprosy, and is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?Compared with ethionamide it has just one extra carbon atom in its side chain, a propyl instead of an ethyl, added to make it better tolerated.
