Puromycin
An aminonucleoside antibiotic isolated in 1952 from the bacterium Streptomyces alboniger: it mimics the end of a charged tRNA and makes protein synthesis stop early. Today it is mainly a laboratory tool for selecting modified cells. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know?In 1963 experiments in mice showed that blocking protein synthesis with puromycin erased both recent and long-term memories: a clue that memory needs new proteins.
