Salmeterol
A long-acting beta-2 agonist bronchodilator, patented in 1983 and in use since 1990: it is inhaled to control the symptoms of asthma, together with a corticosteroid, and of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? The secret of its duration, about 12 hours against 4-6 for salbutamol, is a long lipophilic side chain: it dissolves in the cell membrane and feeds the receptor a little at a time.
