Sparsomycin

An antibiotic discovered in 1962 in the bacterium Streptomyces sparsogenes: it binds the large ribosomal subunit and blocks peptidyl transferase, but it also acts on human cells, so it is used as a research tool for studying protein synthesis. This family brings together the active ingredient.

Did you know?It contains two sulfur atoms in a rare monooxo-dithioacetal group, built from cysteine and methionine, while its uracil-like part is made from tryptophan.
