Spectinomycin

An antibiotic of the aminocyclitol class, close relatives of the aminoglycosides, produced by the bacterium Streptomyces spectabilis and discovered in 1961: it is given by injection against gonorrhoea, especially in people allergic to penicillin. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines and is also used in veterinary medicine; it stops bacteria from making proteins by binding the 30S subunit of their ribosome.
