A macrolide immunosuppressant that blocks calcineurin in T lymphocytes, discovered in Japan in the 1980s and used since 1994 to prevent transplant rejection; as an ointment it also treats atopic dermatitis. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? Its name comes from 'Tsukuba macrolide immunosuppressant': the bacterium that produces it, Streptomyces tsukubensis, was isolated in 1984 from a soil sample taken on Mount Tsukuba, Japan.
