Urapidil
An antihypertensive with a dual mechanism: it blocks alpha-1 receptors in blood vessels and stimulates serotonin 5-HT1A receptors in the brainstem. Described in the late 1970s, it is given intravenously in hypertensive emergencies and around surgery. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? Thanks partly to its central action on 5-HT1A receptors it lowers blood pressure without the reflex speeding-up of the heartbeat that comes with many vasodilators.
