Vaborbactam
A boron-based beta-lactamase inhibitor that is not an antibiotic on its own: combined with meropenem, which it shields from bacterial enzymes such as the KPC carbapenemase, it was approved in the United States in 2017 for complicated urinary tract infections. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its boron atom binds the bacterial enzyme reversibly, mimicking the transition state of the reaction; its ring shape, on the other hand, makes it almost invisible to similar human enzymes, which prefer linear molecules.
