Vancomycin
A glycopeptide antibiotic isolated in 1953 from a soil sample from Borneo, produced by the bacterium Amycolatopsis orientalis and approved a few years later: today it is an important weapon against resistant staphylococci (MRSA). This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? Its name most likely comes from the English "to vanquish"; the first preparations were so impure and dark that they earned the nickname "Mississippi mud".
