Aciclovir

A guanosine-analogue antiviral that blocks DNA replication of herpes viruses. Described in 1977 by Gertrude Elion and co-workers and approved in the United States in 1982, it is used against herpes simplex, chickenpox and shingles. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It is activated almost only inside infected cells, because the first step is carried out by a viral enzyme. Gertrude Elion was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine together with George Hitchings.
