Berberine
A yellow benzylisoquinoline alkaloid found in plants such as barberry (Berberis vulgaris), Coptis chinensis and goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), used in traditional medicine; in China it has been approved as an over-the-counter remedy for diarrhoea. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know?Under ultraviolet light it gives off a strong yellow fluorescence, and its colour was put to use long ago: barberry was used to dye wool, leather and wood.
