Choline
An essential nutrient: it is needed to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the phospholipids of cell membranes, and helps produce S-adenosylmethionine, the universal methyl donor. It was isolated in 1849 by Adolph Strecker from pig bile. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its name, given by Strecker in 1862, comes from the Greek 'chole', bile. In 1852 it had also been extracted from white mustard seeds and called 'sinkaline', but it later proved to be the same substance.
