Clarithromycin
A semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic derived from erythromycin, developed in Japan and on the market since 1991; it is used for respiratory infections and, in combination, to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?It comes from a small change: a methyl group on the hydroxyl at position 6 stops erythromycin from breaking down in stomach acid, making it more stable when taken by mouth.
