Codeine
A natural alkaloid found in the sap of the opium poppy, first isolated in 1832 in France by chemist Pierre Robiquet; it is used as an analgesic for mild to moderate pain and to relieve cough. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? Its name comes from the Greek kodeia, the poppy head; it makes up about 2% of opium, and in the liver the enzyme CYP2D6 converts a small part of it into morphine.
