Cyclopamine
A steroidal alkaloid from the corn lily, Veratrum californicum, that blocks the Hedgehog signalling pathway by binding the protein Smoothened: it is a valuable research tool and inspired anticancer drugs such as vismodegib, approved in 2012. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its name comes from the Cyclops: in 1957 Idaho ranchers saw lambs born with a single eye and, after about ten years of investigation, the cause was traced to this plant grazed by the sheep.
