Cyclophosphamide

An alkylating agent that damages the DNA of rapidly dividing cells, introduced into clinical use in Germany in 1958. It is used with other medicines against lymphomas, some leukaemias and solid tumours, and also in some autoimmune diseases. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?Norbert Brock designed it as an inactive 'transport form' that would switch on mainly inside tumours, thanks to enzymes thought to be more abundant there. In fact the liver activates it: the idea was wrong, but the drug worked.
