Dexrazoxane

A cardioprotective agent discovered in 1972: by binding iron it reduces the free radicals through which anthracyclines can damage the heart during chemotherapy. In the US it has also been approved to treat anthracycline extravasation. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know?It is a derivative of EDTA, the famous laboratory chelator: inside cells its molecule is thought to open its ring, taking on the form that can grab iron.
