Dextran

A branched polysaccharide made of glucose, produced from sucrose by lactic acid bacteria such as Leuconostoc mesenteroides. In medicine it is used as a blood volume expander and as an antithrombotic: dextran 70 is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together other impurities.

Did you know?Louis Pasteur discovered it in 1861, as a microbial product in wine; in sugar refineries, instead, it is an unwelcome guest, because it thickens syrups and clogs the pipes.

EDQM standards 1

The official European Pharmacopoeia standards for this family.
