Dipivefrine

An eye drop for open-angle glaucoma that lowers pressure inside the eye: it is a prodrug of adrenaline with two pivalic acid groups, which corneal enzymes remove; described in the mid 1970s. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and nitrosamines.

Did you know? Thanks to its two esters it is about 600 times more lipophilic than adrenaline and crosses the cornea 17 times more readily: a 0.1% eye drop works like a 2% adrenaline one.
