Ergotamine

An alkaloid produced by ergot, the fungus Claviceps purpurea that parasitises cereals: isolated in 1918 by Swiss chemist Arthur Stoll and marketed from 1921, it is used to treat and prevent migraine attacks, often together with caffeine. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities and other impurities.

Did you know?Ergot was known to physicians long before the molecule: as early as the 16th century it was used to induce childbirth, and later to prevent bleeding after delivery.
