Esmolol
An ultra-short-acting cardioselective beta-blocker, patented in 1980 and in use since the late 1980s: it is given intravenously to control heart rate quickly, for example in the operating theatre and in supraventricular tachycardias. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?It is a 'soft drug' designed to be short-lived: enzymes in red blood cells cleave its ester bond and its half-life is about 9 minutes. The name recalls it too: es-molol stands for ester-methyl.
