Estetrol
A natural oestrogen discovered in 1965 in Stockholm, made exclusively by the foetal liver during pregnancy; since 2021 it has been used with drospirenone in a contraceptive pill. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its nickname E4 refers to its four hydroxyl groups; the estetrol used in medicines does not come from foetal sources but is synthesised from plant sterols in soybeans.
