Foscarnet

An antiviral that mimics pyrophosphate and occupies its binding site on viral DNA polymerases; approved in 1991, it is used mainly for cytomegalovirus retinitis and for herpesviruses resistant to other drugs. This family brings together the active ingredient and pharmacopoeial impurities.

Did you know?Unlike aciclovir and ganciclovir it does not need to be activated by viral enzymes: it works as it is, which is why it is also effective against strains resistant to those drugs.
