Furosemide
A loop diuretic patented in 1959 and approved in 1964: in the kidney it blocks the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter and makes the body excrete water and salt. It is used for oedema and hypertension and is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?Loop diuretics owe their name to the loop of Henle, the part of the kidney where they act, named after its discoverer, the German anatomist Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle.
