Histamine
A biogenic amine made by mast cells and basophils: it drives allergy, inflammation and itch, stimulates stomach acid and keeps the brain awake. Its properties were described in 1910 by the British scientists Henry Dale and Patrick Laidlaw. This family brings together the active ingredient and labelled standards.
Did you know? Its name means 'tissue amine': although made of only 17 atoms, it takes part in about 23 functions of the body.
