Hydralazine

A vasodilator that relaxes the arteries directly, approved in the United States in 1953 and one of the first blood pressure medicines that could be taken by mouth. It is used in hypertension, including in pregnancy, and in heart failure together with isosorbide dinitrate. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It was discovered by chance: the chemists who synthesised it in the mid-1940s were looking for a new antimalarial drug, and during that work they noticed instead that it lowered blood pressure.
