Ketamine

A dissociative anaesthetic synthesised in 1962 by chemist Calvin Stevens and approved in the United States in 1970. It depresses breathing much less than other anaesthetics, which makes it valuable in emergencies, paediatrics and veterinary medicine, and it is on the WHO list of essential medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know? The expression 'dissociative anaesthetic' was coined by Toni Domino, wife of pharmacologist Edward Domino, one of the researchers who carried out the first human tests in 1964.
