Lapachol
A yellow naphthoquinone found in the wood and bark of lapacho trees (Handroanthus impetiginosus, formerly Tabebuia avellanedae), chemically related to vitamin K: in the past it was studied as a possible anticancer agent. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know?It had been known since 1858, but it was the Palermo-born chemist Emanuele Paternò who elucidated its structure in 1882; Paternò was also mayor of Palermo and discovered the photochemical reaction that bears his name.
