Levomenthol

(-)-Menthol, the form of menthol found in mint oils: a monoterpene obtained mainly from Mentha arvensis, first isolated in 1771 by Hieronymus David Gaubius and used in throat lozenges, topical pain relievers and flavourings. This family brings together the active ingredient.

Did you know? Its cooling feel is a chemical trick: it triggers the TRPM8 cold receptor in the skin. About 3,000 tonnes a year are made through an asymmetric synthesis devised by the team of Nobel laureate Ryōji Noyori.
