Lomitapide
An oral inhibitor of the MTP protein, which the liver uses to assemble and release VLDL lipoproteins. Approved in 2012 in the United States and in 2013 in Europe for homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, a rare inherited form of very high cholesterol. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? The idea came from abetalipoproteinaemia, a rare disease in which the MTP gene does not work and almost no LDL is made: Daniel Rader, at the University of Pennsylvania, proposed mimicking it with a drug.
