Mesna

A sulphur compound (sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate) approved in the United States in 1988: it protects the bladder during chemotherapy with ifosfamide and cyclophosphamide by binding and inactivating acrolein, an irritant metabolite. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know? The name is an acronym of 2-MErcaptoethane Sulfonate NA (Na being the symbol for sodium); outside North America it is also used as a mucolytic, to thin mucus.
